Our migration technology began its journey 11 years ago out of a request from Google to build a tool to migrate from Novell GroupWise to G Suite. Since then, we’ve added over 30 source platforms, 3 destination platforms, and have become the world market leader in migration.
As time goes on, various on-premise mail and file systems inevitably reach their end-of-life status; Microsoft Exchange 2010 will end of life in October this year, the impact of which will inevitably force customers into making a decision on the future of their software. They either continue with their chosen on-premise platform as is and accept the risk of running an unsupported platform, upgrade to the latest version of that platform and continue to support the costs of maintaining and supporting on-premise systems, or make the decision to move to the cloud.
Not all platforms give the option of upgrading and retaining the on-premise presence. We are seeing a number of large migrations of legacy Unix-based IMAP platforms as these systems become costly and inefficient to maintain. Again, these projects give businesses the option to introduce the benefits of cloud-based accounts backed by Google or Microsoft to their customers.
These systems provide a unique set of issues as the performance of a migration is skewed heavily by the performance of the on-premise infrastructure, and can impact on the performance of the system from an end user perspective. This means careful planning and testing is required, particularly for these platforms.
As a customer's business environment grows and matures, the factors that influence their choice of cloud productivity suite is also subject to change. When businesses initially make the move to the cloud their decision may have been driven purely by cost. However, over time as their users' requirements change they may need functionality available in a different platform, or the pricing landscape may have changed and they may find more value by moving to another cloud provider.
With the power of tools such as CloudM Migrate and our managed migration services, we are giving our customers the flexibility and confidence to make these cloud-to-cloud moves. We are seeing a strong trend towards cloud-to-cloud migrations and we envisage this being a common pattern in the future as businesses aim to remain agile and prevent lock-in with any given vendor.
With the options our product has to offer, making the move to a different cloud host is simplified as much as possible with options to convert documents to the destination platform’s native formats. Despite cloud-to-cloud making up a large part of this ever increasing portion of our migrations and the future trends going forward, on-premise is still key to usage of the Migrate tool. Around 40% of migrations are still of this type.
Over the last few years, a key trend we have seen is an overall increase in file migration projects. Predominantly these have been on-premise file systems moving to the cloud to achieve the business benefits mentioned above. With the recent addition of Dropbox as a destination into the Migrate product, we have expanded customer options when selecting where to migrate to. Platforms which may have previously been seen as ‘shadow IT’ are now considered key enterprise collaboration tools, such as Dropbox Spaces and Slack. We envisage this trend to continue as customers continue exploring their cloud-to-cloud options and other players enter the market at a competitive price point.
